New Member Lip Sync Philanthropy

On Wednesday, November 11th, our newest initiated brothers competed in the New Member Lip Sync Philanthropy, benefiting Dreams Come True.  Paired with new members of the Delta Gamma sorority, our Rho pledge class took first place in the event, which involved a themed dance and fundraising. Thanks to the following brothers who helped our fraternity take first place: Freeman Bass, Chris Champion, Tyler Dobler, Trevor Roberts, Tom Regan, and JJ Sofarelli.  Our newest members continue to make Kappa Sigma proud by winning the first philanthropy they’ve competed in as brothers!

Alpha Chi Omega Great Escape

On Sunday, November 8, Brothers participated in Alpha Chi Omega’s Philanthropy, The Great Escape. This was an ultimate frisbee competition in which we made it to the semi-finals, losing only to the teams who won 1st and 2nd place. Although we didn’t win, Kappa Sigma was well represented and continues to show how competitive we are with philanthropies.

Brotherhood Development: Trap Shooting

Today the brothers of Delta Delta enjoyed a beautiful Gainesville Sunday at Gator Skeet & Trap. Organized by Morgan Hayes, the afternoon turned out to be a great time and included expert instruction by the experienced range safety officers at GS&T as well as grilled burgers and dogs. It was a fun time for all!

Congratulations to the following 17 Brothers of the Rho Pledge Class on their initiation into the Delta-Delta Chapter of Kappa Sigma: Freeman Bass, Evan Bruce, Mitch Burns, CJ Casselli, Chris Champion, Mike Dimond, Tyler Dobler, Greg Kurth, Nathan LaBuda, Kyle Losin, Chris Lunskis, Tom Regan, Trevor Roberts, Mark Schact, Michael Shurtleff, Patrick Smith, and J.J. Sofarelli.

Homecoming King 2009

Please join us in congratulating Brother Chris Emmanuel on being honored as University of Florida’s 2009 Homecoming King.  This distinction is given to the student that has had the largest impact on the University, and is chosen by a committee of students, faculty, and  the administration.  The finalists were announced at the Homecoming Pageant, and Chris was announced the winner during Gator Growl, the world’s largest student-run pep rally.

Brother Emmanuel has been involved in the Florida Cicerones, Reitz Scholars, Student Government, and Gator Growl, and we are very proud of what he has accomplished.

Kappa Sigma also sponsored Laura Beard, a sister of Alpha Delta Pi, who was a member of the Homecoming Court and a finalist for Homecoming Queen.  Both Chris and Laura were honored at Gator Growl and at halftime during the Arkansas Game.

This is the second time a Kappa Sigma has won Homecoming King in the last three years, since it was started.  Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a great tradition.

Delta Zeta Clay Classic

At Delta Zeta’s Clay Classic, the brothers competed in skeet shooting. Forming an “A” and a “B” team, the brothers did an outstanding job at representing our fraternity. Included in participating in the philanthropy was an excellent lunch provided by the lovely ladies of Delta Zeta. As an added element to the competition, there was a raffle where many Southern Proper items were being raffled off. Many brothers bought raffle tickets and entered their names to win things such as free hats, ties, and headbands. Also, many brothers who were not participating decided to stop by and support their fraternity to win attendance points. It was a great experience for all of those who were involved!

Alpha Delta Pi King of the Court

In Alpha Delta Pi’s 3 on 3 Lionshare Basketball Tournament, 10 of our brothers were able to compete. After an excellent BBQ dinner at the event, the games began. The brothers of Kappa Sigma played hard and, most importantly, had a lot of fun while doing it! Having two teams competing was a great honor, since the more brothers that compete, the more the charitable organization benefits!

TOPSoccer Field Day

TOPS

On September 20th, Kappa Sigma and the ladies of Delta Delta Delta hosted a field day for special needs children in Alachua County through the TOPSoccer organization. Over 40 children and their families came out to Jonesfield Park to enjoy a day of fun games and activities, including relay races, soccer games, and water balloon tosses. 22 Kappa Sigma members attended the event, spending quality time investing in the lives of these special children in the greater Gainesville area. The 46 Delta Delta Deltas in attendance also loved the event, and we are already looking into hosting another field day for TOPSoccer this spring.

Brothers Participate in DG’s Anchor Splash

On Friday and Sunday, September 18th and 20th, the brothers of Kappa Sigma participated in Delta Gamma’s philanthropy, Anchor Splash. Brother Kyle Walker competed in the AnchorMan competition, performing his own rendition of “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel. Then, on Sunday, brothers participated in three different events at the O’Connell Center Pool: a medley relay, “save the DG,” and a dance/synchronized swim routine. The dance to “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen was a great success and the synchronized swim could not have been any better. We were glad to help out such a worthy cause!
